First off got this new painting entitled Swamp Hunter. This was quite challenging but I stuck with it and im happy with the results, I learned alot that Il make sure to employ in future paintings to puch myself even further, Ideally I should start this painting over using everything Ive learned. But I think its better to keep moving rather than redoing the same painting over and over.

New Project started. As part of the Crimson Daggers Bloodsports challenge Il be designing a toy from I made up 80s cartoon show and painting the box art for the character I choose. There were three titles to choose from, I went with Legends of Lizards. For info on my made up show about the Reptile Rangers, see below :D

Not so much a thumbnail, but just brainstorming. After I do a few more smaller color sketches Il do the sketch thumbnails and then the linework and so on.

I like the pose in the second one but the colors in the first.

Study Im working on to get some knowledge on Iguanas before I render.

Il just type out my notes on "Legends of Lizards" exactly, for anyone who is actually interested in that haha.

The Reptilian Rangers, who include Ivan Iguana, Gecko Gary, Mindy Mosasaur, Komodo master Ken, and others.
all get their powers from an ancient lizard artifact that connects their world to the human world. Their weakness is which turns them back into normal sized lizards.
The story is set in the lizards dimension, accessed by a group of kids who stumble on the ancient artifact of the human world...
The arch enemy of the Reptile Rangers is Thorny Devil, who is always trying to steal the ancient lizard artifact to try and take over the human world with his Devilish henchmen.
The Reptile Rangers get their counsel from an old master called Komodo master Ken. And anytime the heroes seem to be caught by Thorny Devil or one of his henchmen, who always seem to grab their tails, the Rangers just detach their tail and escape, to later grow their tail back. (this happens like every episode).

Was very distracted with things in July, couldnt keep up the pace i set in June. It will go back to normal now though, i hope.

WIP of a portfolio piece im working on now. Started it a good while ago, and recently started working on it again. Its a service robot breaking out of a prison, Il try to show that more towards the finish.

A poster i did for my sisters wedding. Inspired by Mucha and celtic art :) as you can see. Although those posters by Mucha arent why I love Mucha, its his other paintings that are fucking insane.
This took up quite a lot of time, one of the reasons I didnt get much work done in July.

Just another portfolio piece. Had alot of fun on this one. So many changes occurred through out. I made my main goal, well first of all to try and make something interesting. But also I wanted strong design. So after a while of killing myslf, and some great advice from Dan Warren :icongoldendaniel:, I decided to keep my designs more grounded. I pushed myself hard on this one, and Im guna go even deeper on the next one.

When Bobby chiu first started making youtube videos I remember him saying that every morning he would do a master study. Then paint it from memory. And then paint a painting from imagination using what he learned. I think il give that a try for a while. Hopefully I dont tap out too soon.
So heres my first one. A portrait by Anton Azbe.

I didnt notice it right away but ive been painting alot of youtubers lately haha.
It started with this painting, its a video game news show and they always have nice lighting. I think the main guy Layne Pavoggi is usually a lighting guy.

This one happened because Greg Benson of mediocrefilms was doing a live stream as his character Yeshmin Blechin. Hes hilarious. I decided to paint him while he was doing it for the craic. I sent it to him he said he might show it in his next video lol :D
Mediocre films

Yeah now this one is a little bigger in work load and ALOT nerdier. Its also only a work in progress btw. Ive only been watching these guys videos for a week but there hilarious and instantly got me hooked on this game MineCraft.
So I decided to do them a painting that is half realistic and half minecraft looking, with caricatures of themselves of course.

Two crappy self portraits. Did that thing again where I make myself look like a religous alien thing, still dont know how that happens!

Heres a painting I did for ChoW, character of the week contest on ConcpetArt.org. The theme was steampunk aphrodite. First time really doing anything with steam punk, t'was fun!

Two Monsters fighting MMA style. Could have done alot better on the lighting. Maybe il come back to it, though the list of paintings I need to go back to now is seriously piling up.

Another daily sketch group painting. The theme was some distorted thing dragging itself onto a tropical shore.

Wahey another unfinished painting! :P This was for EOW, Environment of the week on ConceptArt.org. Its an orrery chamber, for those who dont know, which is most i think! that is a room that has a mechanism displaying a solar system.

Self portrait in acrylics! Finally starting to get the hang of mixing opaque paint. Should do some more of these soon, I want to do some still life to and definetely some landscape stuff.

In my third painting of that day I was using the paint like acrylic and not water color, a big step for me. I was so happy I could mix the colors I wanted and just plop them down that I started putting down a bit too many lol, but actually I really like the look that doing that gives it, I need to think about that and figure out where that could fit into my work.

Painting for the daily sketch group. I used a limited pallete but I dont think it really helped me. I need to do more to figure out how a limited pallete can help me. Maybe some quick color experiments wit no detail.

Master study of Il'ya Repin.
For this I tried something thats been on my mind since before christmas! I got my color wheel and made a gamut mask, so I knew exaclty the hues Id be using and what I wouldnt. And then I made a digital color palete for myself with 10 rows of brightness and chroma. I found the colors I needed for the piece alot quicker and also because everything was numbered I feel like I got a better understanding. I hope to do alot more of these. If I get the time

Its to animate two characters in a dialogue. I chose Merlin and Dopey and the scene from anchorman where Ron throws a burrito out his window at the biker :D
So Merlin from "the sword in the stone" will be playing Ron Burgandy, and
Dopey from "snow white and the seven dwarfs" will play the angry biker haha.

Cant post the storyboard yet coz vimeos totally gay and is making me wait 2 hours!

Been making little maquettes out of plastecine for the last while. Some for reference and some just for fun.

This Pink Panther maqeutte I made for reference when I was animating him. It helped alot!

This guy is in my Jump animation. Il probably post that on here If I havent already, If I decided to paint the layout I did for it, or maybe Il just have the lines. Yeah when I finish up that layout which is of the market in jerusalem il include the animation of this fat guy jumping over the fence.

Heres some rough drawings for a storyboard Im working on. Its going to be a short film about a man used by scientists for experimental drugs. Im planning to do it all in photoshop, except for the drawing. There wont be much animation, I want to create nice visuals.
We all had to base our story on these four lines.

Started this on saturday night, was suppose to be just a sketch but I got carried away. The topic was zodiac warrior. So can you guess what my star sign is? Il probably finish this but the deadlines already gone by.

Yet another challenge on ConceptArt. This ones an environment. Orrery room. Apart from that its totally open. An orrery room is a room with a mechanism displaying a solar system apparently. Never knew there was a name for it. I was thinking, steam punk first of all. And I imagined two characters walking up the stairs, one introducing the other to the machine. Maybe One dominant light source from the left, a spot light, like hes just turned on the lights. Then I could use moon light and monitor light for the rest.

First is a watercolor study of a sculpture.

Then these little stamp sized watercolors Ive started which I really enjoy, and they dont take very long. There even quicker since I got the watercolor pencils, though Im not very comfortable with them yet.

I got the Idea for them from James Gurneys blog. Which is really a great blog, just so interesting. And frequent! Which makes me think I whould be doing alot more, considering how much busier he is than me!!

Some photos I took this week. I have so many photos that I just havent gotten around to correcting and posting. I really want to but at the same time its just not a priority. I saw these three and I got Ideas for them right away so I just did it.

I just want to say im NOT this droopy faced lol. It was a mistake from the sketch phase I didnt spot right away, but I kept it because its got that religous stain glass window figure look haha. I mean regarding the porportions of course.
Anyway for the first time I feel like I got the lighting right in low light conditions, I really struggle with that. I like things to be clear, I wish I lived somewhere really sunny .

Self portrait. Still trying to use my shape to shape in a gestural way while applying it to a painting process. It has its uses and I think this is definetely something for me to take further. Its not really evident in this painting though haha.

Ive started watching Laurel and Hardy, and Chaplin films. All the acting is done with no words, its amazing. Well theres talking in Laurel and Hardy but not much. Many animations today rely on words to communicate whats going on, but they shouldnt have to. The other day, to demonstrate why a part of my animation of the skipping guy was wrong, my lecturer covered the legs by putting his hand in front of the screen. I then saw that the problem didnt lie there, but in the legs. What If I was animating a character where he was also talking, and I turned off the sound, would it still communicate the same thing. Thats what I want to get out of this. This could also be carried into Illustration. I also love the shapes that are made by the actors, even when Laurel and Hardy are just standing there doing nothing there doing something interesting!

Im getting increasingly pissed off with my long hair. Specifically in the front, when it gets in my face I just wana cut it all off! But when I think of not having long hair im torn because ive always wanted long hair and I still do. The other day I was trying to think of a comprimise and after alot of thought I came up with the dreadlock mullet! haha. Id still have long hair, that I wouldnt have to worry about as much( no more fucking frizz) and Id also have short hair in the front, which is so much easier and practical. Now the only problem is not knowing if it would look TOO mullet-ey. Another problem is that when my hair is medium length, its really curly, so it might look stupid. :S

So this is what I do when I dont paint. >_<

Studying anatomy is fun lately :D

Going to do more mma pics like this, mainly gesture stuff. Man I wish I could train my art as hard as these guys train their bodies! So inspiring.

Heres where im at with this weeks ChoW (CharacterOfTheWeek). Im fairly into it at this stage! Having started on monday helped so much! Oh and the theme is Father Time, or the grim reaper. I thought of a nightmarish hallucination sort of thing. I dunno when I read the brief I thought, I am sooooo not doing the old man in the robe shit, I mean my idea isnt totally different to that. But what I dont want to get into is like the hollywood Idea of something. I just wanted something fresh. And when I think of an old demon whos job it is to collect souls for eternity, I think of some horrifying beyond the imaginable. Its like hollywood has always portrayed aliens as being humanlike, which is the most retarded thing, from a scientific stand point. If there is aliens, they could be absolutely anything, they could be orbs of light or some shit. They wont have noses and ears haha. But of course the reason hollywood portrays as humans is to make them relatable, so I kept that in mind too when doing this.... thing. RANT OVER.

William Bouguereau Master study. I. Fucking. LOVE Bouguereau!!

And this weird little guy I painted as an Idea for a "Wind Waker" style 3d character im making in 3DsMax.

So after a week of being painfully sick what have I learned... Dont get sick! Its fucking awful, you want to paint, but you cant! But whats interesting is that I didnt stop doing this habit Ive had for, as long as I can remember Ive always been doing it. Im always observing things and If say Ive been painting alot Il think "how would I paint that" just about anything. Sometimes I think its more benificial than actually physically painting lol. Theres been times where I havent painted for a long time and when I do paint again im some how a little better! :S Amazing. Anyway since I was sick and couldnt paint execpt in my head, I thought Id watch some one else paint. So I went on MassiveBlack and got the Brad Rigney download. Recommend it!! Its like 4 and a half hours long and after watching that everytime I went to mentally paint heh. Id be painting like Brad! He uses the smudge tool all the time and so Id be thinking, "now how would I smudge that" lol. Anyway when I tried it on those creature designs and the pigeon photo study I found I had it DOWN. So thats my little lesson for today haha. EVEN IF YOURE SICK YOU SHOULD STILL BE PAINTING.... in your head!

Not being able to work SUCKS

Last sunday after I finished the ChoW I realised I was getting a cold. By monday my head was trobbing! So All last week I couldnt do ANY work! It was seriously the worst.... And now Im finding it hard to get back into my routine which is even worse.

Ive finally got around to doing my own paintover of the last ChoW. Because after doing it and immidiately realising ALL the mistakes I made I thought I shouldnt just leave it and say lesson learned. I want to make this image work!
The three main things that went wrong were:
Didnt paint it thinking of how it would come across to others
Never got around to the second light source
Started everything off very dark expecting to build up, but that led everything to be very muted down and uninteresting
So heres what ive fixed so far. It can still go farther. I feel like If I can make this one perfect that will help me in future paintings. Also it will hopefully improve my eye for errors.

Before a battle with there enemies he silently killed the captain and all witnesses. He even had crew members on his side. He gave the rest of the crew a story of an attack by there rivals and since he was the no.2 guy, the decision to make him the new leader was unanimous.

Studying Bridgman and Vilppu this morning.

And the character im working on this week for ChoW.
"As a respected member of the Sky Pirates for more than ten years, it was obvious that after the previous captain suffered an “unfortunate accident” in battle, (s)he would take up the leadership of the pirate crew. Behold the new Captain of the Sky Pirates: feared by his/her opponents, admired by his/her crew!"
My idea for this image/character is that althugh hes a well respected member of the air pirate group, hes a devious dude and he kills the previous leader during battle because he knows he would be the obvious choice to take over. You can see him in my last image putting on armor, thats suppose to be the armor that the leader wears and so every other peiece of clothing hes wearing im going to make very raggy and battle worn, to contrast and also to show a little more the story behing the image. And thats the dead old captain on the left who I dont know what to do with yet, I might just have him in a tshirt and boxers to really make sure the point gets across that my main character is after taking his armor :P. Well see, im still sketching and working out composition.

I was working on a godzilla remake painting. These are some failed studies before the painting bit. Can you FEEEEL the lack of motivation I had????

Heres what my Idea consisted of. A godzilla of bugs basically. Nothing to special about the godzilla itself really. Basically just a monitor lizrd/Komodo dragon standing upright with a bit of extra spikes or something. I wanted to make the foliage look like a little city. It would have been awesome but I just wasnt feeling it. Maybe il pick it up later.

Saw that lots of people will do morning sketches that are basically letting your brain invent and not getting too caught up in thinking of what youre doing so I thought id try. Theres so much to cultivate to become pro :S

Photo study from this morning, fuckin ROCKED this one! Super quick too! I took more time in the begining stages than I have been doing lately. It paid off later when I was able to be more expressionistic or whatever you wana call it.

After I finished the photo study I was naming it and I realised it was no.20. I thought that was worth mile stoning. Is that an expression? :P anyway! I did it. Unfortunatly photoshop cant count and actually ive done 24 photostudies so far, but sshhhhhh!

Im working on a ChOW this week again, but Il just post everything with the finished product on sunday. If I get there!

Did my first master study in a good while, I pulled a brain muscle tryin to figure it out!

I really enjoyed all the research and different Ideas I had to come up with to get here, that makes me think even more that Illustration may be my path. But knowing me theres a chance I might get sick of it.. I have to get a handle on that soon! :P

Sketched up a quick background, I wanted it to be colorful and bright. But that may not suit the character Im putting across. He is a fierce warrior, but he is also ugly, and since this is aimed at a game featuring many characters of near equal strength, Id say hes more of a villian/ henchman type character.
But I already sketched the bg haha Now im getting lazy... It has been a long day... maybe tommorow il feel like changing it :S

I was thinking of entering the CHOW (character of the week) this week on CA (conceptart.org). Which is to design a fighter character from any period in time, he just needs to look like a champion. For some reason I taught of a cave man, probably coz I think Im being original by going back as far as I can :P. So these are just some heads, trying to figure out who I want him to be. Sketching is so helpful, not only did it loosen me up but I narrowed so many things down. Unfortunatly the deadline for this is the 27th so maybe at this rate I wont be done in time.

Took my time again, tomorow I want to try and keep my colors seperate so theres no bleed, that way I can put down all my colors quicker and also I think mixing my colors better and getting the right water to pigment solution is a better way of doing these sketches. Also I think Il try and finish it before dinner time maybe... maybe Il get some actual work done.... Good barbecue though.

Im always sooooo inspired by Hayao Miyazaki. His stories are amazingly imaginative and in depth and the animation in his films is stunning. But for some reason the thing about him that inspires me the most, like physically makes me get to work, is his little watercolor sketches. They show with few lines and colors so well what he wants to put across. And when you see all the concept work for his animations its amazing how real he makes his ideas seem. Thats basically what im after with this painting. Although it took me fucking agessssss. Im so out of practice this would have taken me around a half an hour a month ago. Im going to do more today but this time I want to keep the colors simpler again. If I dont get distracted by the scorching sun... or holly wanting more play.

First up is this imaginative painting ive been doing, its going to go through alot before its done. I may even scrap everything and redo it. Ive just gotten a fairly long crit on ConceptArt which I havent actually read yet but hopefully that will help because Ive been looking for some advice on composition. Also I think I might try making a fake brief and deadline for myself, why not right?

This was a 10 minute or so opener for an animation test I put up on youtube. It was a college project, to animate a character walking, front view. I chose to draw a frog man for some reason :P A funny thing about it is, when I was done. Sketches using references, just for fun. Drawing from life or ref is always so much more relaxing for me, I think its because I know the result will be ok at worst and I can make believe I created something :)

Cool exercise I tried following some ones advice on CA. I drew once from ref, and then from my head in a different position and adding to it. (click image to see bigger)

MEGA BOARD! Painting outside is annoying for me :P the tubes are everywhere, I have to hold up a board, its uncomfortable. And it just sucks basically. SO I need some board that has everything right there and its so sturdy all I need to worry about is getting the brush into the paint and then onto the page. When you gota hold the pallete as your taking paint and all that crap it just breaks the concentration.

Had to take a little break after college finished last week, I was WAY too stressed out. Anyway Ive un-wound now and im ready to get into a routine, there just so much of my art I want to develop I really have to make out a schedule or something. I have more plans but I wont mention them yet in case I end up not doing them haha

So first here is some sketches I did while watching the Vilppu drawing lecture thing, really really awesome lectures, Ive learned SO much already and I hardly watched any of it.

Same again but decided to add color, I ended up going over the lines with another layer which could have ended up looking awful but its not bad
Those two drawings show sort of what I want to advance at this summer. Ive been thinking about it for a long time, I want to develop a process of sketch, clean up sketch, line work, colors etc etc. But what ever way I end doing it basically I just want it to be consistent and effective so I can keep doing it and hopefully my original paintings will be more fluid.
Last post is a failed self portrait I did a while back. Again trying to nail down a process, but without lines. By putting down a midtone, working in shadows, then highlights. It failed because I couldnt take it anymore and I strayed from the plan, I got lost and I just couldnt continue, It was taking forever. Il probably do another of the same photo though. Doing line work really helps so I think thats some thing Il do more.
